There is detailing going on in the Philippines. Overall I am amazed how well they are doing. All the practitioners of rebar detailing in the Philippines are by graduate civil engineers, which sadly is not true in other parts of the world. The design engineering world has gone through many paradigm shifts - now with emphasis in Ductile-Moment-Resisting-Frame-Design - requiring detailers to be in step with the designers. The president of Barlines, Amadeus (Mady) Magpile once thought Structural drafting and Rebar Detailing at the Los Angeles Trade and Technical College. In the two year alloted for the course, he was barely able to teach Strength of Materials & Drafting to high school kids. When he started Barlines, he went around recruiting young Filpino Engineers who were unable to be in thier chosen field. Some where parking cars at LAX. In a very short time they were detailing. Mady was responsible for over 40 Filipino engineers into rebar detailing in California.
While indeed there are detailers in the Philippines, at Barlines, we recognized that these rebar detailers are at a disadvantage because of the following:
The absence of a Manual of Standard Practice in Rebar Estimating and Detailing, so we wrote one. Engineers refer to ACI and CRSI, but often they do not apply because they are in Imperial. The engineers recruited excel in CAD but had poor detailing know-how.
The absence of a Fabricating shop that can establish what fabricating equipment can and cannot do. We established one.
The absence of basic and/or sophisticated estimating and detailing software, so we promote their use.
they are subjected to commentaries by a stuctural draftsman who is, in our opinion, in the same boat as they are.
Barlines has teken the lead by compiling such a Manual of Standard Practice. The first edition is ready and displayed herein. Modesty aside, we felt we are the most qualified to do this. Barlines was onced commissioned to teach rebar estimating and detailing in Pune, India and most recently the Koreans wanted the same thing.
Fortunately, Barlines have the support Sy^2, the foremost Structural Engineers of the Philippines and the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines.
